3 Reasons Why Your Teeth Are Shifting and What You Can Do

Have you noticed misalignment in your teeth? While teeth are securely anchored into the jawbone, they can shift out of alignment. Shifting can be the result of:

1. Age

There are several changes that occur as you age. You may lose jawbone density, causing the teeth to shift. Your jawbone also continues to grow and your teeth may shift forward with the growth, causing crowding.

2. Erosion of enamel

Loss of tooth enamel as a result of teeth grinding or cavities can result in a change in the shape of your teeth. It is important to have regular dental checks to pick up on the signs of root canal, bruxism or other causes of enamel loss in order to address them as early as possible.

3. Missing teeth

If you have missing teeth, the surrounding teeth will most likely move downward or sideways. This shifting occurs as the teeth lack support from their neighboring teeth. Missing teeth also result in loss of jaw bone mass, which in turn results in the shifting of teeth.

What you can do about shifting teeth

It is important to address the issues that are causing the shifting in the first place before correcting the misalignment. Have a dental checkup to identify the cause of the shifting. If you have tooth decay, have your teeth filled or have a root canal to deal with the decay and prevent further deterioration of your teeth. If you have missing teeth, have them replaced to provide support to neighboring teeth and prevent bone loss.

You can then invest in clear teeth aligners to address the misalignment and restore your bite. Clear aligners are comfortable and much easier to clean than traditional braces. You will also be able to align your teeth without drawing attention to them.
