Yellowing Dental Crowns – Here’s What You Should Do

Dental crowns are used to address various dental issues. These range from improving the aesthetics of your smile to restoring function to damaged teeth. They are an effective and long-term solution. They look and function just as your natural teeth. Thus no one can tell you had dental crowns unless you tell them. 

Like your natural teeth, dental crows can become discolored. This can happen for various reasons including: 

• Damage to the tooth – When the tooth beneath the dental crown becomes damaged or discolored, the dental crown will become discolored. 

• Eating or drinking staining foods – Like natural teeth, dental crowns can become discolored when exposed to staining foods and drinks. Staining can also occur as a result of smoking. 

• Optical illusions – Dental crowns can appear to be discolored if you go for teeth whitening treatment after having the crown installed. Unlike your natural teeth, the dental crown will not become brighter as a result of the treatment. It will therefore appear discolored against the whiter and brighter natural teeth adjacent to it. 

What to do when dental crowns become discolored 

Dental crowns can’t be whitened using home whitening kits. If you have a yellowing dental crown, follow the steps below. 

1. Try brushing your teeth thoroughly to see if the staining is on the surface.  If the staining does not change even if you maintain good oral hygiene, it may be a sign damage to the tooth below the crown or permanent staining from foods or habits such as smoking. 

2. Seek professional dental care. You may have a damaged tooth that requires professional attention. You may also need to have your dental crown replaced. 

Consider the dental cap cost and avoid habits or foods that can cause staining of your crown. Maintain good oral hygiene habits to prevent damage to your teeth that can cause discoloration. Be sure to apply the tips above if you do notice discoloration.
